Common Square Dance Terms
Allemande left - Corners join left forearms and walk around each other CCW back to their original positions
Call - The directions given to the dancers
Caller - The person who announces the square dance calls
Corner - The lady on the gentleman's left, the gentleman on the lady's right CW - Clockwise
CCW - Counterclockwise
Do-si-do - Two dancers face each other, advance, and pass their right shoulders. They move to the right behind each other and without turning, they pass their left shoulders as they back into place.
Elbow swing - To walk around the designated person by hooking the right or left elbows
Grand right and left - The partners join their right hands and pass each other, right shoulder to right shoulder. They walk in the LOD (or RLOD) toward the next person, giving him/her a left hand and passing left shoulders; dancers progress around the set in this manner until they meet their original partners.
Head couple - Couple number one, or the couple with their backs to the music
Home - The dancers' original starting positions
Line of direction (LOD) - The circular path taken by the dancers while performing a dance figure; usually CCW. Reverse line of direction (RLOD) is usually CW.
Promenade - Dancers walking in rhythm with the music; may be performed in couples, or in a single file
Set - A set consists of four couples, each with their backs to one of four walls; couples are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4, around the set in a CCW direction, starting with the head couple.
Heads - Couples one and three
Sides - Couples two and four
Opposites - The couples facing each other
Opposite - The person directly across
