The Chieftains - An Irish Evening DVD
Throughout their four decades of championing traditional Irish music, the Chieftains have had to suffer their share of the peculiar Irish snubbing known as begrudgery. Precisely because they became so successful abroad, the Chieftains have always seemed to have to fight for recognition and validation on their home turf. So this concert video, filmed in 1991 at the Grand Opera House in Belfast, is gratifying as a splendid performance on its own and as a sweet homecoming. The program (also available on CD), which features several ensemble reels and hornpipes, guest appearances by Nanci Griffith and Roger Daltrey, notable solos, and a brief Irish dance segment, thoroughly engages the audience, a feeling palpable on the video.

Frank Patterson Collection DVD
Famed Irish tenor Frank Patterson, who died in June 2000, is remembered in World of Music, which features concert performances as well as brief interview segments with friends and family members. His widow, Eily O'Grady Patterson, provides personal anecdotes, as does Patterson's son Eanan, who is also seen accompanying his father on violin. In concert, Patterson sings with orchestral accompaniment as well as with an Irish folk group, the Cassidy Brothers. He showcases his classical training by singing a Bach cantata, and his popular appeal is demonstrated with Irish songs such as "Farewell My Derry Love" and even the American country standard "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain." Patterson himself recalls performing in John Huston's final film, The Dead, explaining the significance of "The Lass of Aughrim" in the story by James Joyce before he performs the song. This is a fitting tribute to "Ireland's Golden Tenor," who carried on the tradition of the great John McCormack and reached a worldwide audience.

A Feast of Irish Set Dances VHS
If you love the flash and pomp of Riverdance and Feet of Flames, you may find this very back-to-basics exploration of Irish set dancing a bit tame. But in fact, therein lies its true appeal. This 50-minute video, shot entirely in West Kerry, focuses on the real native folk who gather in pubs to do these centuries-old dances. The dances are often distinguished by the region in which they flourish, and this video demonstrates three Kerry or polka-type sets: one from North Kerry, one from South Kerry (knows as Sliabh Luachra, or the Mountain of Rushes), and one from West Kerry. They generally feature four couples dancing in a circle, then pausing for some interaction with each other--not unlike American square dancing. While it's not ideal for learning the dances yourself, the video does a great job of presenting the tradition in its own environment; lovers of Irish music and culture will find a lot to enjoy.

Irish Hooley - A Traditional Irish Evening of Music, Song and Dance VHS
This 45-minute video visits the Mills Inn pub in County Cork for a "hooley"--a traditional evening of Irish music and dance, featuring the talented, but very nonflashy, nearby residents who have a flair for singing and stepping. Some of the featured performers include the Temple House Ceili Band, who perform traditional numbers such as "When You're Sick, Is It Tea Ye Want?" Singer Sean O'Se croons some lovely ballads, including his "Puc ar Buile." Several solo and group dancers give energetic performances on the tiny dance floor of the pub. The effect is warm and surprisingly wonderful, as though we've actually stumbled into the pub ourselves after a long day of wandering the back roads of Eire
